First "TMJ" Appointment

What To Expect:

The first appointment is called a comprehensive history, evaluation, and consultation appointment. 

This is a relatively long appointment that consists of several different parts.

Part A) Comprehensive history

    1) Medical history – this is a review of current medications, allergies and medical conditions.

    2) History of chief complaint – a detailed discussion of your chief complaint(s).

            a) What is your chief complaint(s)?

            b) Frequency, duration, intensity, and location of chief complaint(s) at this present time?

            c) When did it start?

            d) Was there a specific event associated with when it started?

            e) Frequency, duration, intensity, and location of chief complaint(s) when started?

            f) Change in chief complaint(s) over time since it started?

            g) History of: jaw locking, jaw joint noise, head/neck trauma?

            h) Aggravating and alleviating factors of chief complaint(s)?

            i) Previous treatment attempts of chief complaint(s)?

Part B) Comprehensive evaluation – consists of the following:

    1) Cranial nerve exam.

    2) Ear exam.

    2) Range of motion of head and neck evaluation.

    4) Muscle, ligament, and tendon palpation exam of the head and neck.

    5) Range of motion of jaw and jaw tracking evaluation.

    6) Jaw pain in range of motion evaluation.

    7) TMJ noise evaluation.

    8) TMJ palpation evaluation.

    9) Dental exam.

Part C) Consultation – May consist of any of the following:

    1) Review of different TMJ conditions and facial pain syndromes.

    2) Anatomy of TMJ.

    3) Function of TMJ.

Part D) Discussion of next appointments

    1) Diagnostic appointment - consists of any or all of the following: 

        a) Radiographic imaging (x-rays) - These are critical in the process of reaching a diagnosis. They are used to look for dental, jaw bone, or TMJ pathology.

            i) Panoramic dental.

            ii) Bilateral lateral TMJ in open and closed views (side view of jaw joint).

            iii) Bilateral P-A TMJ in open and closed views (front to back view of jaw joint).

        b) Diagnostic models of teeth.

        c) Digital imaging of teeth and face.

        d) Postural evaluation.

    2) Case presentation appointment - consists of any or all of the following:

        a) Review of TMJ anatomy.

        b) Review of TMJ function.

        c) Review of clinical report:

            i) Significant findings from first two appointments.

            ii) Review of Imaging.

            ii) Diagnosis.

        d) Review of proposed treatment plan.

        e) Review of consent for treatment forms.

        f) Review of office financial policies.

        g) Review of insurance benefits.
